It’s a new type of tour of duty – for IT professionals. The government is issuing a call to arms for IT pros to work on federal IT projects for 6 to 12 months.

The new initiative, called the Presidential Innovative Fellows program, hopes to attract new minds to help address some of the prominent issues the country faces, applying some of the best minds to some of the most pressing current problems.

The White HouseThe program is accepting applications from IT professionals to match the inaugural 18 fellows from August 2012 who worked on issues such as the ability to use cyber money for international relief (the Better Than Cash initiative); MyUSA.com, a website geared toward helping citizens get the information from the government they need; and Blue Button America, a program that allows veterans better access to their own health records.

The White House is calling for a second wave of IT pros to follow in the footsteps of their successful colleagues. The new initiatives for which the federal government is actively soliciting fellows include Disaster Response and Recovery, which hopes to integrate data and tech into the world of first-response emergency relief, and 21st Century Financial Systems, which seeks to retool federal finances to a more cost-effective model.

It’s clear that the programs in the spotlight revolve around issues like health care, finances and running programs as smoothly as possible with the most cost-effective footprint possible. It also means that it could lead to better job opportunities for those who earn degrees and certificates in IT, project management and business development.

The program refers to those IT projects as methods to enhance public good and refers to accepted fellows as “change agents” – technological minds that can think objectively for new solutions to some of the country’s most pressing and costliest problems.

The last round of applications brought in a selection pool of 700 IT pros, according to Information Week. For Round 2, the initiative is soliciting those who have project management, business development and operations re-engineering experience to take on the growing need for innovation on a federal level.
