The University of Washington (UW) has taken a new step with the creation of a separate Masters of Communication in Communities and Networks degree, due to be offered in the fall of 2013.
While the university had previously offered a Masters of Communication in Digital Media, this year faculty and stakeholders branched out with an alternative degree. The Communication in Communities and Networks degree is paired with the Digital Media degree in the university’s communication leadership program. Students will have the ability to earn dual masters of communications degrees if they wish.
While the digital media degree deals primarily with electronic and social content, the focus of the new degree is much broader. It will deal with creating advantageous business relationships and building connections across cultures in all types of interaction, from face-to-face meetings to electronic communication. While it includes digital media, it is more about “managing people, systems, and change,” as the University of Washington Communication Leadership Brief states.
“We see this new focus as the essential next phase in our communications revolution,” said the Chair of the Department David Domke. “Our Communication Leadership program, with these two emphases, positions us at the forefront of understanding how mediated and face-to-face communication work together to drive opportunities in an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world.”
In addition to creating the new master’s degree, the university will be hiring two new assistant professors to help with the expanded program. One will focus primarily on big data and managing information in the most efficient ways possible, while the other will deal primarily with the ethical considerations behind communication and how to deal with privacy in the age of social networks. Both professors will start their classes in the fall of 2013, coinciding with the new program changes.
The move represents an acknowledgment by the University of UW that digital communication is a fully integrated part of our modern lives. Education in social media and online interactions has become useful for nearly all business professionals, not only those specializing in marketing, content or IT development.
