New integration, the latest cloud-based procurement technology, and similar innovations have created a need for new skills in the workplace. As a result, universities are paying more attention to supply chain management MBAs.

The newfound interest reflected in a variety of new programs and a focus on updating traditional degrees with more modern features that respond to changes in the world of logistics.

Colleges like Bryant University have recently introduced one-year MBA programs directed at working professionals who want to expand their career opportunities. Notably, the degree includes a focus on “Global Supply Chain Management,” which addresses the intricacies of international firms and government agencies.

Meanwhile, the University of Michigan is revamping its current College of Business offerings, according to a news post on the university’s site. Previously, graduate students had to complete seven different courses to receive a master’s degree in Business Administration. In addition to the credit revision (down from 63 to 48) the university is making it particularly easy to qualify for a master’s in supply chain management, which now requires only 30 credits. The lowered credit option was designed for students who want to focus on core skills and enter the workforce prepared for higher-level positions.

The Wall Street Journal has even reported the trends and analyzed the new interest in inventory and supply chain management instruction. Citing recent worst-case scenarios like discovering horse meat in the meat processing chains of Europe or accidentally producing yoga pants out of see-through fabric, the Journal pointed out that managing supply chains have become more important than ever as companies grow global.

Logistics evolve into more complex departments, as supplies and raw materials are no longer controlled by the regulations of a single government or industry benchmark. Quality control becomes even more essential in these conditions.

In order to meet the demand, businesses need to acquire a more skilled workforce and universities are responding to the trend with a tighter focus on necessary competencies. Related skills like data analytics should also grow more important as time passes, giving universities even more possibilities for future degree programs.
