Small businesses created 42 percent of all new jobs in the month of April, according to the ADP National Employment Report. It indicates that 50,000 jobs were created by small enterprises in the month.
They have created a total of 300,000 jobs since the beginning of the year, based on ADP numbers. ADP puts out a monthly report on non-farm, private-sector employment in the United States.
ADP considers any business with under 50 employees to be a small business. Within its data, the largest bulk of new jobs were created in small businesses that employ less than 20 people — what ADP calls “very small businesses.” In total, ADP reports that 67 percent (34,000) of the new jobs in April were created by these very small businesses.
April marked the third month in a row that very small businesses created more jobs than small businesses with 21 to 49 employees. While both business categories created the same amount of jobs in January (53,000), very small businesses created 124,000 jobs from February through April, dwarfing the 71,000 jobs created by small businesses.
Job-seekers may find their best employment prospects today are in small businesses, especially those very small businesses in the services sector, which are producing the most employment growth. Very small businesses led growth in all kinds of jobs, whether they were focused on manufacturing or various services. ADP reported that 90 percent of the new jobs in the goods-producing sector and 63 percent in the services providing sector came from very small businesses.
The service sector proved to be by far the best source for new jobs in small business. The service sector is a general employment category that includes jobs in finance, business and professional services, education, retail and health care. According to the ADP report, 41,000 of the 50,000 new jobs were in the services sector. A similar ratio has been seen in recent months, with more than 80 percent of jobs coming from the services sector for every month so far this year.
