New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a venture capital firm, has announced a new program for web development experts and designers who are launching mobile and web startups. NEA Studios is a 12-week course that acts as an incubator to advance fledgling startups, offering space to work, a stipend and the expertise of industry professionals.

The new incubator is one of many in the New York City area assisting entrepreneurs and spurring economic growth through their facilities.

The goal of the program is for entrepreneurs to turn a side project into a company within three months, using the tools and relationships provided by NEA. The program also offers stipends to fund work and weekly sessions with investors to analyze progress.

Although the act of pulling together a startup company may once have been largely the territory of business entrepreneurs and technologists, designers and web development experts are now assuming major foundational roles, as well, says Dayna Grayson, Partner at NEA. In the press release, she adds, “Creating an amazing user experience is both art and science, and design plays a more important role than ever in developing a product — especially mobile and Internet applications.”

New York City houses many incubators and shared workspaces. For example, the nonprofit New York City Economic Development Corporation has created 10 different incubators throughout the city.

Placing the responsibility in the hands of the designer is the goal of this particular incubator. NEA Studios will act as a catalyst to the growing web development and design field, but instead of offering full-time positions, the company’s goal is to offer design professionals a route to success through their shared workspaces and investor relations.

Tony Florence, General Partner at NEA, says the program will offer designer-founders a jumpstart in building their products. In addition, networking with other entrepreneurs will add momentum to those projects as they move forward. The program starts on April 30.
