General Motors (GM) plans to hire 1,000 IT professionals to staff a new Information Technology Innovation Center near Phoenix, Arizona. The move is part of GM’s multiyear initiative to hire more than 4,000 in-house IT employees for technology centers across the country, the company said in a press release on March 6, 2013.
Hiring will begin on April 1 to staff a temporary tech center in Phoenix until construction of the permanent facility in the suburb of Chandler is complete, which is expected to be in early 2014.
GM said its strategy is to build a pool of skilled professionals to support the company’s information technology projects, including vehicle technology, factory and dealer systems, and web-based systems. The new employees will include software developers, systems analysts and database administrators.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), those three occupations are projected to grow quickly over the coming years. Employment of software developers, for example, is expected to increase by 30% nationwide between 2010 and 2020, more than double the average growth rate for all occupations. The number of computer systems analysts, meanwhile, is projected to leap by 22% during the same time period.
Hiring is expected to be even more robust for database administrators, with the BLS projecting 31% employment growth through 2020.
The new Arizona facility will join three other technology centers GM previously announced for Roswell, Georgia, Warren, Michigan, and Austin, Texas. The automobile company said it already has hired more than 1,000 workers for those three centers, and anticipates hiring the remainder of the IT employees within three to five years.
GM said each of the four Information Technology Innovation Centers will be located near cities with a high concentration of technology talent, including thousands of college students pursuing IT-related degrees.
“Recruiting talented IT professionals is intensely competitive,” Randy Mott, chief information officer for General Motors, said in a statement.
The four locations also offer vibrant communities with a relatively low cost of living and are home to high-tech industries, Mott said.
