An eye-opening 83 percent of alumni with a master’s degree in finance say they are secure or very secure in their current jobs, according to a survey conducted by the Financial Times.
The survey polled students who graduated in 2010 with finance degrees from one of the schools featured in the Financial Times annual Masters in Finance Ranking.
This list recognizes finance programs that have been operational for at least four years and have achieved strong international mobility, diversity and alumni salary statistics. The survey highlights this key point: 80 percent of 2010 finance degree alumni currently work in the field.
The Financial Times also found alumni still in the finance sector three years after graduation are more confident in their job security than those who chose other careers. Only 67 percent of those with finance degrees working in other careers say they are secure in their positions.
Eloïc Peyrache, associate dean at HEC Paris (which topped the Financial Times list), credited employment terms for finance graduates as the primary reason for high job security. Peyrache says finance school graduates get jobs with better security than graduates from other leading sectors, according to research done by his school.
Finance workers who express this level of security are in turn loyal to their employers. The Financial Times found 65 percent of those working in finance anticipate being at the same company in five years. Nearly all alumni working in finance (96 percent) say they will continue to do so for the next five years, compared to 35 percent of those employed in non-finance jobs.
Another survey from the giant job site Monster.com agreed with the Financial Times survey about job security for finance professionals. Four out of five in the Monster survey say they are confident about their prospects for finding a job in finance, and 43 percent believe there are more jobs now than a year ago.
In addition to this high degree of job security, Monster discovered that finance professionals are among the most satisfied workers in the United States. Monster data indicates that 36 percent of finance professionals are satisfied with “all aspects” of their jobs.
