Consumer Spending Increased in November, Government Reports

Consumer spending rose again in November 2013 at the fastest rate since June – the latest in string of good news about the economy.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that spending by consumers had jumped by .5% in November after a .4% gain in October. The Commerce Department reported that the gain was driven by consumers buying durable goods such as automobiles, furniture and appliances.

Economy Grew in the Third Quarter at Fastest Rate in Two Years

As the country headed into the last weekend before the Christmas break, the federal government announced that the gross domestic product in the third quarter grew at a faster rate than first reported.

The economy expanded in the third quarter at a 4.1% annualized rate, higher than the 3.6% first reported, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. That’s the fastest rate in almost two years.

A new report shows that more private college president than ever are making $1 million-plus salaries at a time when the expense of higher education is keeping many people out of school.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that 42 private college presidents had earnings that topped $1 million in 2011, the latest available figures available. That was a 36% increase from the 2010 level.

The nation’s industrial output experienced the biggest increase in a year in November, led primarily by utility companies making big profits during the recent cold temperatures across the country.

According to the Federal Reserve, industrial production increased by 1.1% in November, which is the biggest increase since November 2012.

Compared to November 2012, production is up 3.2%.
