The Unemployment Rates Drops to 6.7%, But Numbers Show Weakness in Job Gains

The nation’s unemployment rate fell to 6.7% in December – but primarily because so many people dropped out of the workforce, according to numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The 6.7% number is the lowest since October 2008. However, the BLS reported that 347,000 people stopped looking for work. The federal government only counts those who are looking for work but unable to find a job as the “unemployed.”

Stocks Had Record 2013, Jobless Claims Lower in December

Two major indicators of stock market health – the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index and the Dow Jones industrial average – ended 2013 with the highest gains since the end of last century.

The S&P 500 increased by 29.6% in 2013, the index’s best annual performance since 1997. The big jump added $3.75 trillion in market value, according to the New York Times. Meanwhile the Dow Jones jumped by 26.5%, the best performance since 1995.

Stanford Professor Offers Book on Future of Technology in Education

A Stanford University professor has released a new book that investigates some of the possibilities that technology brings to the future of education.

Larry Cuban, a former high school social studies teacher and professor emeritus of education at Stanford, has released a book called, “Inside the Black Box of Classroom Practice: Change Without Reform in American Education.”
