JP Morgan Pledges $1 million Toward College Programs For Veterans

JPMorgan announced this week it will give $1 million to schools to improve higher education courses for United States military veterans.

In a press release, Maureen Casey, the director of military and veterans affairs for JP Morgan, said the money is meant to help veterans make the transition from serving their country in a military capacity to the working world.

Leading Economists Back Increase in the Minimum Wage

A group of leading economists, including seven Nobel laureates, have joined the effort to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

The Fair Minimum Wage Act – introduced by Rep. George Miller, D-California, and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa – would increase the minimum wage in a series of steps over three years. The current minimum wage is $7.25.

The Unemployment Rates Drops to 6.7%, But Numbers Show Weakness in Job Gains

The nation’s unemployment rate fell to 6.7% in December – but primarily because so many people dropped out of the workforce, according to numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The 6.7% number is the lowest since October 2008. However, the BLS reported that 347,000 people stopped looking for work. The federal government only counts those who are looking for work but unable to find a job as the “unemployed.”

Consumer Spending Increased in November, Government Reports

Consumer spending rose again in November 2013 at the fastest rate since June – the latest in string of good news about the economy.

The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that spending by consumers had jumped by .5% in November after a .4% gain in October. The Commerce Department reported that the gain was driven by consumers buying durable goods such as automobiles, furniture and appliances.

Mary Barra Named CEO of GM, First Woman To Ever Head Major Car Company

In another sign of the leveling playing field between men and women in the business world, Mary Barra was named this week as the new chief executive of General Motors Company.

She will be the first female CEO at a major, global car company. Barra will replace retiring chief executive Dan Akerson.

According to an article from Bloomberg Businessweek, Barra, 51, started her career on the General Motors factory floor as an intern 30 years ago. In her current job – senior vice president for global product development – Barra manages product development and quality of all GM cars, a position she has held for 22 months.

Starbucks Vows to Hire More Veterans, Offer More Aid to Veterans

Starbucks has joined a list of companies that have policies in which they are hiring more veterans. The move comes as an increasing number of veterans are returning to the civilian workforce from duty overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Starbucks, which is based in Seattle, announced that it is willing to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses between now and 2018.
