2014 world repuation rankingsThe United States continues to dominate the rankings of schools around the world with the best reputation among fellow academics, according to a new survey out of Great Britain this week.

Times Higher Education released its 2014 World Reputation Rankings, which lists the top 100 schools considered to be the best by fellow educators.  The rankings are based on nothing other than the subjective judgment of those who work in higher education at institutions around the globe.

Clearly, the world still views American institutions as the crème de la crème of higher education.

The United States holds eight of the Top 10 positions in the survey.  The Top 10 universities with the best academic reputation, in descending order, are:

  1. Harvard University
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  3. Stanford University
  4. University of Cambridge
  5. University of Oxford
  6. University of California, Berkeley
  7. Princeton University
  8. Yale University
  9. California Institute of Technology
  10. University of California, Los Angeles

Other American universities in the Top 50 include Columbia University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Cornell University, John Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois, New York University, University of Wisconsin, Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, University of Washington, University of California – San Francisco, University of Texas, Northwestern University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, University of California – San Diego and Purdue University.

In total, the United States has 42 of the 100 universities on the list. The United Kingdom is second, with 10. However, in comments made upon the release of the rankings, Times Higher Education editor Phil Baty noted that the United Kingdom has lost three schools since the reputation rankings were first published in 2011: University of Sheffield, University of Leeds and University of Bristol.

“Given how important global reputation is in attracting top international talent, collaborations and investment, this is cause for concern,” Baty said. “The UK has some of the world’s biggest university brands: we must protect them.”

Germany has six universities on the list. Japan has five, The Netherlands have four and France has two.
