General Motors (GM) – as well as most major car companies – are offering a discount on car purchases for college students, allowing them to purchase vehicles for thousands of dollars less.
The offer is extended to college students, recent college graduates and current nursing school and graduate students, according to the GM website.
The car company also allows college students the chance to combine the college discount with other incentives, such as bonus cash, consumer cash, trade-in allowance and owner loyalty offers.
Participation is not required by GM, so not all dealerships offer the discount. The GM deal is good on new and unused 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet, Buick and GMC automobiles.
The amount of discount depends on the model. For example, those buying a 2014 Camaro get a $1,405 discount, while those getting a 2014 Cruze get a $802 discount, according to the GM site. Larger discounts are offered on the bigger – and more expensive – trucks and SUVs such as the Silverado, the Suburban and the Tahoe.
The GM offers, as well as those from other companies, is yet another positive for those who earn a bachelor’s degree – in addition to the better pay projected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
At Ford, the discount is $500, called the “student bonus.” The program, which started in January 2013, is scheduled to end Jan. 2, 2014.
Students who are currently enrolled full-time or part-time at accredited four-year college or university, junior college, community college or trade school are eligible for the program. Students have to be taking at least 6 credit hours to qualify. Those in graduate school also qualify, as well as those who are recent college graduates (between May 2011 and January 2014).
The Ford cars eligible for the program include all Ford cars, SUVs and trucks (through the F-550). Hybrids are also eligible.
Hyundai also has a deal for college students, offering discounted prices for students who will graduate in the next six months or who graduated in the past two years, according to the Hyundai website. Hyundai offers college students an additional $400 on top of other rebates, with no down payment required and 90 days until the first payment is due.
Nissan offers the same deal for recent or about to graduate college students, according to the Nissan website. The discount amount varies depending on the model. The models eligible for the discount include the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Versa and the Frontier truck.
Toyota offers students or recent graduates a $750 rebate on many models, including the Corolla, Camry, Yaris, Prius C, Tacoma truck and RAV4. Honda offers a $500 discount for those who purchase through Honda financing. Honda requires students to pay 5% down.
