Enterprise Mobile StrategyEven though the mobile revolution is well under way, a new survey sponsored by Kony reveals that some 84% of companies don’t have an enterprise mobile strategy set to help them take advantage of it.

The results of the Kony survey were released in an IDC white paper published in July 2014. The survey focused on 400 IT decision-makers at American-based companies who have the responsibility and/or the influence to direct mobile strategy at their firms.

Of those surveyed, only 16% said they are currently using mobile solutions and have a mobile strategy in place.

While survey results demonstrate companies that do make investments in mobility are seeing meaningful benefits, including higher brand awareness, increased sales and decreased costs, the majority of respondents admitted their companies have yet to make mobile a focus.

The Growth of Mobile

The mobile explosion is evident in a few key numbers pointed out in the IDC white paper. The worldwide mobile worker population, for example, was anticipated to hit 1.2 billion by the end of 2013. The number of tablets and smartphones shipped worldwide will climb to more than 2 billion by the year 2017, IDC estimates.

That growth provides companies a chance to capitalize on mobile strategies. But the survey revealed that few are taking advantage of it by creating an enterprise-led mobile strategy.

Challenges to Overcome

While many respondents said their firms intend to create mobile strategies, they cite a number of potential obstacles that stand in the way:

  • Security and compliance concerns
  • Issues getting mobile platforms to link with existing databases
  • Deployment time
  • Control issues between applications and mobile OSs and/or enterprise applications
  • Budget issues
  • Complications with installation, management and/or support

Other Key Findings

Kony’s survey revealed a number of key findings:

  • Nearly 50% of companies that have a mobile solution say they are benefitting from faster, smarter decision making, cost savings, better interaction with customers and improve efficiency
  • About 41% of companies do have an enterprise-wide mobile budget
  • Some 31% have a mobile technical staff
  • Nearly 40% of those surveyed say compliance and security are big concerns

Thomas E. Hogan, Kony’s chief executive officer, says that mobile strategies are now a “must have” as the number of mobile users continues to grow in leaps and bounds. The survey, he said, shows that organizations with a mobile-first model can improve their performance while engaging customers, partners and employees.

“Developing a clear mobile strategy is not something enterprises can ignore any longer,” he said in a press release.
