UnemployedA new survey finds that 69% of Americans would rather remain jobless than work for a company with a bad reputation.

However, more than half of currently employed employees would go to a company with a bad reputation – if they were offered a substantial increase in pay.

The annual survey from Corporate Responsibility Magazine and Allegis Group Services questioned about 1,000 employed and unemployed Americans. The focus of the survey was to determine American’s attitudes about the reputation of companies and how it can affect job decisions.

The survey, conducted in August, includes interviews with about 500 men and 500 women.

“The results of this year’s survey demonstrate the importance of a positive corporate reputation in recruiting and retaining talent. Our year-over-year analysis shows that this sentiment remains strong among employees and potential new hires in 2013,” Elliot Clark, CEO of Corporate Responsibility Magazine, said in news release.

The survey found that 62% of respondents would leave their current jobs for a company with a bad reputation if they were offered more money – 4% more than those who responded in last year’s survey. How much money would it take? A majority of those responding said they would switch companies for a 50% to 100% increase.

That’s less than last year, when a majority of employees said making a switch would require double the pay.

The number of those who would leave their current job for a position with a company that has a good reputation was 84%, according to the survey. A majority of those willing to make this switch said they would need a pay increase of 1% to 10%.

“As Americans continue to cope with the employment-related repercussions of the financial crisis, the majority of people would still prefer to work for a company with business ethics that align with their own values,” Bruce Morton, head of innovation at Allegis Group Services, said in a news release.

Corporate Responsibility magazine focuses on business professionals who are seeking case studies, best practices and news about trends in five major areas of corporate responsibility: goverance, risk and compliance; environmental sustainability; corporate social responsibility; philanthropy and diversity.

Allegis Group Services is a privately-held network of human capital services companies with access to human capital experts from around the world.
