The global market for outdoor Wi-Fi market is expected to increase from its current worth of $15.41 billion to $37.2 billion by 2018, according to a report by MarketsandMarkets, a global market research and consulting company based in the U.S.

This could mean that new jobs will be created at companies that serve the wireless market. To meet this growing demand, access points, wireless networks, hotspot gateways and WLAN controllers will all be necessary, which is good news for those interested in a career in wireless technology.

The software, telecommunications, electronics and manufacturing sectors will naturally be seeking qualified applicants. Increased career potential is anticipated from electrical and software engineers to technical support specialists, accountants, customer service reps and installation and repair technicians.

Cisco IBSG Consumer Research, in its report “What Do Consumers Want from Wi-Fi?“, states that increased use of tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices is pushing expanded wireless access. The study authors predict that, “mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold from 2011 to 2016.”

Cisco’s market research indicates that respondents use their mobile devices an average of one to 1.5 hours a day. About 25 percent of the survey’s respondents said they use their mobile devices throughout the day to make phone calls, check emails and access the Internet. In fact, accessing the Internet at will with a mobile device is now as natural as turning on the television. As such, users want seamless and constant Internet access.

Public and private industry is working to meet these new demands on Wi-Fi. For example, California’s state website provides a list of hotspots and specifically names state parks and cities with free wireless access. In Ohio, Cleveland’s Ward 13 recently announced free outdoor wireless access for residents. Approximately 4.5 square miles and 11,000 residents and businesses now have free outdoor Wi-Fi in Ward 13.
