A Wanted Analytics study shows a strong upsurge in demand for human resources (HR) professionals in early 2013, as recruiters and companies posted 115,000 advertisements for available HR jobs in February — a 14 percent jump over February 2012.

That’s good news for all types of employment, the company said in its press release, as demand for human resources careers usually indicates an uptick in general hiring projections. Firms tend to need more HR employees when they expect greater overall numbers of employees to manage or when they need to recruit more people to fill necessary positions.

The top three most commonly advertised jobs on Wanted’s list were recruiter, human resources assistant and payroll specialist positions. In fact, three additional types of recruiters (recruiting coordinator, technical recruiter and senior recruiter) appeared in the top 10 most-desired professionals.

While the news indicates possible activity in the employment sector, the HR world may be hard-pressed to meet this new demand. Some companies might struggle to fill their open jobs, Wanted Analytics notes. Wanted, which uses data analysis to provide insights on employment and hiring trends, also gauges the difficulty of hiring the right talent for these open jobs. In looking at available labor supply in relation to job openings, it describes these jobs as “moderately hard-to-fill” on average, and pinpoints Odessa, Texas, and Ames, Iowa, as the specific places that will struggle the most to fill needed jobs. The easiest spots, it adds, are Norwich, Conn. and Albany, NY.

With demand increasing for human resources careers with a high level of professional skill, a host of higher-education programs and professional organizations offer opportunities for HR personnel to add to their credentials: HR employees can get an MBA in Human Resources or specialize in a variety of areas with continuing education through groups like the Society for Human Resources Management. The HR Certification Institute also awards specific credentials in HR practices.
